Forget the fad diets. After 11 years of coaching transformations in South Florida, here are the five nutrition habits that consistently separate the people who get results from those who don't.
South Florida is a unique environment for fitness. The heat, the lifestyle, the social culture around food, it all creates specific challenges for people trying to lose fat and improve their body composition. But after working with hundreds of clients in Weston, Sunrise, Davie, and the surrounding area, we've identified the habits that work, regardless of the season, the social calendar, or the temperature outside.
If there's one nutrition habit that has the biggest impact on fat loss, it's protein intake. Protein does three critical things for body composition:
Most people dramatically undereat protein. The general recommendation for active adults trying to lose fat is 0.7-1g of protein per pound of bodyweight. That sounds like a lot, and for most people, it is. Start tracking your protein for a week and see where you actually land. Most people are shocked.
Good protein sources: chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, lean beef, and protein shakes when needed.
In South Florida, this one is especially important. Between the heat, the social culture, and the abundance of smoothie bars and coffee shops, liquid calories are everywhere, and they add up fast.
A single Starbucks Frappuccino can contain 400+ calories. A "healthy" smoothie from a juice bar can easily hit 600-800 calories. A couple of drinks on a Friday night? Another 400-600 calories.
None of these liquid calories do anything meaningful to make you feel full. They just add to your total calorie intake without providing satiety.
The fix is simple: drink water, black coffee, or unsweetened tea as your primary beverages. Save the other stuff for special occasions.
One of the simplest and most effective nutrition strategies we teach at OFW is the "protein and vegetables first" approach. Here's how it works:
When you sit down to eat, fill half your plate with vegetables and a quarter with protein before you add anything else. This simple habit does several things:
You don't have to eliminate carbs or fats, you just eat them after you've already filled up on the good stuff.
The biggest enemy of good nutrition isn't lack of willpower, it's lack of preparation. When you're hungry, tired, and there's nothing ready to eat, you'll default to whatever's convenient. And convenient usually means calorie-dense, nutrient-poor food.
You don't need to meal prep every Sunday like a fitness influencer. You just need a loose plan. Know what you're going to eat for the next 24-48 hours. Have the ingredients on hand. Have a backup plan for when things go sideways (a protein bar, some Greek yogurt, a bag of nuts).
In South Florida, where dining out is a constant temptation, this is especially important. Look at the menu before you go. Decide what you're going to order before you're sitting at the table, hungry and surrounded by tempting options.
This is the most important habit on the list, and the one most people get wrong.
Perfection is the enemy of progress in nutrition. The person who eats well 80% of the time and doesn't stress about the other 20% will almost always outperform the person who tries to be perfect and fails repeatedly.
South Florida living means social events, family dinners, beach days, and celebrations. You don't need to opt out of all of these to get results. You need to be consistent enough that the occasional indulgence doesn't derail your progress.
The goal isn't a perfect diet. The goal is a sustainable one.
Knowing what to do and actually doing it consistently are two very different things. That's why nutrition coaching exists, not to tell you things you don't already know, but to build the habits, accountability, and personalized strategy that makes those things stick.
